J.R. Needy Foundation Scholarship

To honor the memory and spirit of academic excellence and professional dedication of Dr. Jerome R. Needy by providing scholarship awards to students majoring in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration to recognize achievement and encourage professional preparation in the field.

Please submit the following requirements.

  • Please submit a response (1 page, typed, double space, with 1-inch margin) to the essay question, “Identify one key issue that affects the future of the park and recreation professions in California. How might this issue be addressed?” Your response may include all aspects of municipal/community parks and recreation, non-profit recreation agencies, outdoor recreation, resource management, therapeutic recreation, recreation for special needs populations, and commercial recreation businesses and activities (tourism, hospitality, etc.).
  • Please submit a current resume (including a list of service organizations or clubs to which you belong and a summary of your leadership skills/abilities, including previous experience coordinating or implementing recreation programs (services) in a community setting).
  • Please submit a copy of the unofficial transcript
  • Please submit a letter of recommendation from an RPTA faculty member. The letter must be printed on letterhead and signed.
  • Please submit a letter of recommendation from a recreation professional who has first-hand knowledge of your abilities, accomplishments, and potential. The letter must be printed on letterhead and signed.
